Arcata City Council elects a new mayor

ARCATA – The City of Arcata has a new mayor.
At a special meeting Thursday morning, members elected Sofia Pereira to lead the city for the next year. Newest council member Brett Watson was elected vice mayor and will serve in Pereira’s absence.
Outgoing Mayor Susan Ornelas thanked the community for its support in what she described as a challenging year for the city.
Pereira said it is an honor to serve, and she will continue to focus on housing and public safety among other priorities.
Pereira will lead her first meeting as mayor on December 20th.
