Danger in the Operating Room? Nurse Reports Grievances against St. Joseph Hospital

Eureka, Ca., (KIEM)-  Imagine having a nurse going in to her 14th hour on the job in the operating room. That is the scenario described by a union representative from the California Nurses’ Association (CNA).

According to a statement from CNA representative Ian Seldon, a nurse at Saint Joseph Hospital claims she did just that. Friday, she filed an “assignment despite objection” report with the union. The form protests unsafe staffing, transferring liability for quality of care from the nurse to the hospital.

In response St. Joseph Hospital’s Interim Chief Executive David Southerland says quote: “In keeping with our commitment to the delivery of the highest standard of patient care, we have created a comprehensive plan with nurse leadership in our surgical services department to ensure appropriate levels of staffing in our operating rooms.”

The grievances filed with CNA have also been reported to state agencies according to their statement.
