Eureka’s Waterfront Drive connection project takes next steps

EUREKA – A project to connect Waterfront Drive with Old Town is moving forward.
The first of the two phase project was completed more than ten years ago and rebuilt Waterfront Drive between K and I streets.
Now plans have been drawn up to make the final connection from H to I.
The city used $300,000 in grant funding to secure the right of way from Union Pacific Railroad earlier this year.
Now staff will tap $735,000 in state transportation funds for construction of the road which is expected to be complete by early 2019.
The empty parcel next to what will be the new road is still owned by Union Pacific Railroad and city staff hope extending Waterfront Drive might spur development on the property.
City Manager Greg Sparks said, “You need good road access to develop property so the important thing will be for Union Pacific to get more realistic about selling the property rather than just hanging on to it. So hopefully this will provide some aid to overall transportation into Old town and provides additional ways in and out of the are
