Students return to class following norovirus outbreak

EUREKA – Students are back in class at South Bay School following a norovirus outbreak that forced the district to close its doors.
The highly contagious virus struck the school in mid-December setting off a wave of closures across the county in an attempt to prevent further spread.
To prepare for students’ return, staff at South Bay worked to disinfect campuses. They followed recommendations of public health to clean all hard surfaces with bleach.
And the district took extra precautions to ensure that all items students regularly use at school were also sanitized.
Coordinator of Maintenance and Operations for South Bay School Shannon Wilson said, “We hired a local company called safe handles and they came in on January 2 & 3 and treated every area of the campus with their own product. It’s like a fogger and it comes in and it just shoots everywhere and it gets in to everything. It specifically kills the norovirus. They’re coming back over the next couple weekends and going to do a secondary and a third treatment in common areas like restrooms, in here in the cafeteria and I’m confident that this is going to do the trick.”
The district said they will be closely monitoring attendance to watch for additional norovirus cases.
