Mental status hearing delayed for Polish woman charged with causing daughter’s death

EUREKA – The woman accused of causing her infant daughter’s death, Ewa Misztal appeared in court Thursday, but the hearing was delayed again.
The courts expected to hear a report from a San Francisco based psychiatrist on Misztal’s mental health status.
Deputy District Attorney Carolyn Schafer said she did not have a copy of the report in her file. Public Defender Casey Russo pointed out that it had been shared with both attorneys at the end of December.
Schafer requested a few weeks to review the report. Russo replied that Misztal is anxious to see the case resolve. Russo further stated that he believes the report will lead to a resolution in the case.
Arcata Police arrested the Polish national in August of 2016 after her seven week old daughter died from what officers described as suspicious skull fractures.
Misztal has entered a dual plea of not guilty by reason of insanity.
She will appear in court again on February 1st.
