City of Eureka says all tenants deserve safety, boards up another Squires property

EUREKA – The City of Eureka shuttered another building owned by Floyd and Betty Squires.
Only three tenants remained in 833 H Street when contractors employed by the City of Eureka arrived Monday morning to board up the building.
It took crews several hours to secure the 15-unit residential complex.
City staff said it went smoothly and all of the tenants had secured at least temporary housing by Monday’s closure.
Department of Public Works said the owners had ample time to address ongoing issues including hazardous electrical wiring but those issues were not corrected.
Director Brian Gerving said the city recognizes the need for low income and very low income housing and that owners of those properties still need to comply with health and safety regulations.
