Gangway: Humboldt Harbor District to Talk Cruises on the North Coast

Eureka, Ca., (KIEM)- “It’s been more than a decade,” Humboldt Bay Harbor Recreation and Conservation District Board of Director’s President Richard Marks explained, “Since there’ve been cruise ships in Eureka.”

That may soon change. Commissioners will be discussing the installation of an aluminum gangway, waterproofed and corrosion resistant to help with the harsh conditions that being by the sea is on metals. Providing the infrastructure necessary to draw five cruise ships to the North Coast is one of the ways the region is planning to lure in more of that trade.

“We’re going to be talking the logistics of that. About who is going to have the authority to do what, because it’s going to take a multi-agency effort to actually pull off the cruise ships coming in.” Marks explains.

So, what can we expect from the meeting this Thursday at Woodley Island Marina? District staff recommends the new executive director, Larry Oetker, be authorized to use up to $15,000 in commission funds to co-fund the acquisition of a gangway for cruise ships along with the City of Eureka and County. Other ideas have come to the table, but so far Larry Oetker is the leading force proposed for these changes and commission funds.

The proposed construction site: Schneider Dock in Eureka.
