Humboldt HIV cases soar

EUREKA – The Humboldt County Health Department is reporting a dramatic rise in several illnesses.

Health officials say there’s been a recent spike in HIV cases. Health officer Donald Baird says the Health Department has also seen an increase in cases of gonorrhea, syphilis and chlamydia.

Usually he sees one positive syphilis case a year. He says that’s jumped to five a week. Baird said the diseases can be treated, but have to be diagnosed first. You can make an appointment to get tested for STD’s by calling the health department: (707) 268-2108.
