Wanted felon in custody after police standoff

Fortuna, Ca. (KIEM) Fortuna Police has a wanted felon in custody Monday after a three hour long standoff. Melvin Matthews of Eureka surrendered to officials after barricading himself inside of a garage on the 1800 block of Penn Avenue.

Matthews was wanted on felony warrants for evading law enforcement and making threats against a police officer, grand theft and possession of a stolen vehicle.

A citizen called officers in regard to a stolen vehicle which lead officers to Matthews. Three other individuals were arrested, interviewed and then released at the scene.

Officials from Fortuna Police Department, Eureka Police Department’s K-9 unit, Cal Fire, Humboldt County Sheriff, and the swat team were all on scene.
