All year long, the Veterans building in Fortuna collects old and tarnished American flags from the public. The first weekend after Flag Day, is when their burning ceremony takes place. For the community, it’s a time to retire the flags honorably.

Veterans, Fortuna Fire, Boy Scouts, and Cub Scouts met this morning at the Fortuna Fire station where speeches were held, prayers were said, and the star spangled banner was sung.

Navy veteran, Alvin Dunnegan, believes it’s important to teach the Cub and Boy Scouts to honor the flag at a young age. He also says that this is an exercise that teaches them the importance patriotism.
