A once-stranded hiker is safe rescued by Coast Guard Sector Humboldt Bay. It happened just north of the Klamath River mouth Sunday afternoon.

The hiker contacted the Del Norte county sheriff’s office at 2:30 where he became stranded at the bottom of a cliff while hiking the Damnation Creek Trail.

Helicopter crew arrived on scene an hour later where they saw the hiker waving a red flag near the breaking surf behind a layer of dense fog. The hoist was conducted next to the 300 foot cliff, utilizing the entire length of the helicopter hoist cable.

The hiker was flown to sector Humboldt Bay where he was met by members of his family. He sustained no injuries.
