Humboldt County Civil Grand Jury: ‘Is Measure Z measuring up?’

EUREKA, Calif. (KIEM) – The Humboldt County Civil Grand Jury releases another in a series of reports, this one regarding Humboldt County’s Measure Z.

Measure Z was approved by voters in 2014, as a half-cent sales tax, for public safety and essential services.

Complaints into how the over 50 million in revenue was being spent prompted an investigation.

The Civil Grand Jury concluded it to be generally meeting goals – however, they found a quote “significant lack of accountability in tracking and monitoring expenditures,” and point to a failure to conduct annual audits, up until this year.

By paying for nearly 40 new deputies, 6 million in firefighting equipment, among other services, the Grand Jury goes on to say failure to continue Measure Z funding could be ‘catastrophic’.

More details from their report can be found, here.
