Arcata, Ca., (KIEM) The City of Arcata Community Development Department has been awarded with a five-million-dollar Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) from the California State Department of Housing and Community Development. The City will be using funds to make upgrades in the community.

The majority of CBDG funding will be used to make upgrades to the City’s wastewater treatment facility, including the installation of a new Ultraviolet light disinfection system. Arcata will also use CBDG funding to help provide affordable housing opportunities in the community. Funds in the amount of $1.9 million will be used to assist Housing Humboldt, a local nonprofit dedicated to developing and managing affordable housing, with the rehabilitation of the Arcata Gardens Apartments, which consists of 37 units of affordable housing.

There’s going to be new signage because right now the signage is down. There will be upgrades to the interior of the units and then the focus is ADA accessibility” Jennifer Dart, Deputy Director for the city’s development department, said. “There will be improvements to the roof, if we have enough funding.

The Community Development Block Grant Program awarded counties throughout the state, collectively, over $60-million.
