Convicted sexual predator denied placement in Howard Heights area

Eureka., Ca (KIEM)- The decision to place a sexually violent predator in the community of Freshwater is denied. At the Humboldt County Courthouse on Thursday morning, Judge John Feeny decided against allowing 38-year-old Joshua Cooley to return to the Howard Heights area, after 16 years in custody.

Cooley is at the Coalinga Mental Facility and was tentatively scheduled to be released to live on Howard Heights Road. But with an out pouring of community members and residents the hearing was moved to the Board of Supervisors Chamber.  Some saying, Cooley’s mental state and unwillingness to accept treatment puts him at high risk of committing more sexual crimes. Feeney was quick to make the decision and ordered the Liberty Healthcare Corporation to continue the search for a proper placement.

Cooley’s grandparents, Shirley and Joshua Herrera were present and voiced their concerns as well, saying Cooley has paid his debt to society, and that he needs an opportunity to prove himself. Judge Feeney has scheduled a hearing to review Cooley’s placement status on October 23.
