Briceland, Ca., (KIEM) On a hill, at the top of Briceland Road in South Humboldt. Stands  a wooden shed with the numbers 5959 plastered on it. Walk through the gate, a quaint winery welcomes you.

“My mother and stepfather started the winery in 1985, ” said Andrew Morris, Co-owner of Briceland Vineyard. “After starting research for grape farming in the area starting in the mid-70s.”

The cool climate of Humboldt County is great, where grapes can ripen timely -but when an unexpected fire is near.

“It is something that makes us nervous when there’s a lot of smoke,” expressed Morris. “Around a few years back we did a big clearing project.”

Which is a good thing because over three-fourths of the grapes used in Briceland’s wines are grown in Humboldt County. Once owned by Morris’ parents the father of one made it his mission to own the legacy someday.

“My wife and I came and started apprenticing in 2008 and took over the winery operation in 2011. That was kind of the plan all along.” said Morris.

Rosie Morris, Andrews’s wife and co-owner of Briceland Vineyard said it was never easy for her husband.

“During Crush the Grapes don’t care what your schedule is like work has to be done sometimes for my husband that’s an18 hour day”

Now, Andrew and wife Rosie are said to have the best wines around.

“The best of show. Best red wine. Best white wine and best pinot.  In fact, we entered 13 wines and of those 11 got silver or better.”

Briceland vineyards has been producing award-winning and is known as a leading producer of wines from local Humboldt grapes. Briceland Vineyards wines are available at markets and restaurants throughout Humboldt County.
