North Coast activist shares insight on how to reduce waste

Samoa.,Ca (KIEM)- A study done by the United States Environmental Protection Agency claims the average person generates 4.40 pounds of garbage everyday, but for one north coast resident, she has made it her life’s work to inform people about reducing waste. The Samoa Cookhouse is where Zero Waste Consultant Maggie Gainer gave a presentation on waste management.

There, she explained the importance of avoiding single use material. Things like plastic water bottles or paper bags can be avoided to reduce our carbon footprint. She tells Redwood News its about preparation. That we need to think about what we use day to day and look for creative ways to reduce re-use and recycle.

After the q&a Maggie shared with the group, Humboldt County has made significant efforts to clean up litter, but where the real change begins? It’s knowing whats recyclable and pushing environmentally conscious policies. She hopes that one the day zero waste philosophy will become a reality.
