Studying Algae in the Eel and Klamath Rivers

Fortuna, Ca., (KIEM)- It’s about understanding the impacts of algae blooms in the Eel River.

Several dog deaths have been recorded since 2001, and are linked to the presence two toxins. Toxins produced by algae or cyanobacteria. One is a fast acting nuerotoxin, another attacks the liver, and has been found in the Klamath River area.

The eel river recovery project is working on publishing a report that analyses and summarize the affects of algae on local water quality, with cooperation for UC Berkely and UC Santa Cruise.
