Arcata, Ca., (KIEM)- Angelina Torres radiates light. An HSU student, majoring in social work, she is the recipient of a $9,000 scholarship from the CSU system she wears a smile around campus. Perhaps that smile seems so unwavering because she truly is living her dream.

Throughout her childhood, Torres was told her place was in the home. “I don’t come from a whole family of academics,” says Torres. “I grew up in an environment where education was not discussed or tolerated. In fact, my grandfather told me that I would never make it in school and that my job was to cook and clean.” If discouragement was not enough, Torres’ mother also struggled with drug addiction while she was growing up.

Ultimately Torres dropped out of high school. But that isn’t where she let her story end. Determined, and inspired by an encouraging math teacher, Torres earned her GED. Then, while raising her children, has maintained a 4.0. GPA.

Now, the scholarship not only helps her to bear financial concerns, it comes with an academic support system.

“The scholarship is more than about winning money,” she says. “It’s about people who believe in me. It also shows me that my goals are achievable and I can be what I want to be, which is amazing.”

She hopes to pave the way for other women who face financial hardship and doubt. Torres is going on to pursue her masters in social work and wants to attend law school.

She is also dedicated to suicide prevention in Humboldt County, and recently chaired a walk for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention: raising $20,000.
