EUREKA, CA., (KIEM)- In otter news: 100 life sized river otters are about to pop up across the county. They’re sculptures; an ambitious collaboration between the Art and Science departments at Humboldt State University.

The project commissions 3-foot tall art pieces to appear in shops, galleries, schools and other spots across the North Coast. Ultimately, the statues will be auctioned off to support watershed projects and student internship opportunities.

“The initiative arose from a desire to share what we are learning about wild river otters with the community,” says HSU Wildlife Professor Jeff Black, who is leading the project.

HSU has also helped pilot a citizen science project prompting locals and visitors to record when they spot a river otter. The program, launched in 1999 has logged its 5,000th citizen report.
