Eureka Host Lions Club serves and celebrates 90 years

Eureka, Ca., (KIEM) Eureka Host Lions Club gathered for its 90th celebration. For the past 90 years members of the Eureka Host Lions Club have served the citizens of Eureka and Humboldt County and Saturday celebrated decades of accomplishments.

The anniversary started with Lion Royal McCarthy as master of ceremonies and included comments from former local and regional lion’s club members. Following the introduction attendees took a trip down memory lane with photos and personal stories.

The club also gave out a certificate of appreciation to a few familiar faces, Supervisor Virginia Bass, and Eureka Mayor Frank Jager for their continuous community service efforts.

President of the club, Jerry Carter, says the Eureka Hosts Lions Club has been around for such a long time and its main focus has always been the residents of Humboldt.

“We provide services for a lot of people who can’t afford them,” said Carter. “We try to work and help at the grass level, what the needs are. We provided eyeglasses for homeless people, we have hearing aids for people who need those. There’s nothing more thrilling, it’s fun, it really is.”

Lions club is also international and is the world’s largest service club organization with more than 1.4 million members in more than 200 countries and geographical areas around the world.
