Measure M: Keep or remove McKinley?

Arcata, Ca., (KIEM) Measure M, the centerpiece of Arcata resident’s ballots, the decision to keep McKinley as a statue in the plaza.

Last week, the bronze statue was vandalized, although supporters for its removal claim this was not their doing. This week, the Arcata Planning Commission will hold a public meeting for input on the current draft of the environmental impact report for the possible “McKinley statue removal project”, a project initiated by Arcata City Council.

Supporters for removal point to the president’s moral history. Others argue that the former president didn’t do anything worse than any other presidents.

Next month, Arcata voters will decide the future of the statue. If voters check yes on “Measure M” means the statue of President McKinley stays. A check no means it goes. The Planning Commission meeting will be held tomorrow at 6 pm in Arcata council chambers.
