Search underway for Humboldt State University student swept to sea

EUREKA, Ca. (KIEM) – A Humboldt State University student was fishing on the North Jetty on Monday at about 4:30PM on Monday, when he was swept out to sea by a sneaker wave.

A man attempted to rescue the student by going in after him, but endangered his own life in doing so, and was himself rescued with a rope offered from Eureka High students who happened to be in the area.

The Coast Guard deployed a rescue boat and helicopter, and the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office, along with Samoa Fire Department, and the Arcata Fire Department, provided aid in the search.

We are sad to share news that a Humboldt State University student was swept into the water at the North Jetty in Eureka today at about 4:30 p.m. He was hit by a sneaker wave, and has not been found.
Numerous agencies, including the U.S. Coast Guard and other first responders, have been searching for the student.
Our thoughts are with all of those affected by this accident, and the University is reaching out to provide support to friends and others.
