Twelve acre wildfire in Southern Humboldt caused by escaped camp fire

SOUTHERN HUMBOLDT, Ca. (KIEM) – According to Cal Fire, a vegetation fire that grew into a 12 acre wildfire in Southern Humboldt was caused by an unattended camp fire.

The fire broke out on Friday afternoon in the Mattole area, and Cal Fire received assistance from Honeydew, Petrolia, Briceland, and Rio Dell volunteer fire departments. Cal Fire says the wildfire is now contained.

In response to this incident, here are safety tips from Cal Fire:

CAL FIRE would like to remind the public to follow the rules below when conducting any outdoor burning:
* Clear all flammable material and vegetation within 10 feet of the outer edge of fire.
* Keep a water supply and shovel close to the burning site.
* Have a responsible adult in attendance until the fire is dead out.
* No burning shall be undertaken unless weather conditions (particularly wind) are such that burning can be considered safe.
* You may be civilly and criminally liable if your fire escapes your control.
