EUREKA, Ca. (KIEM) – Eureka City Council, by a unanimous vote, will transfer Indian Island back to the Wiyot Tribe.

Two points of clarification were made Tuesday evening. The Wiyot Tribe believes this is sacred land, not a surplus property. Second, this is not just a transfer of property, it’s a step towards equality and liberation.

A packed room listened to Development Service Director Rob Holmlund explain to council the lengthy process of negotiations. For some members of the tribe, they’ve been waiting a lifetime for this decision. When speaking to Chairman Ted Hernandez, he says this land will be used to continue traditions, to honor those buried, and to create a new place for healing.
