Local resident falls victim of $185,000 phone scam

A local resident falls victim of a phone scam and sent $185,000 cash to an address in Illinois.

According to the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office, the scammer contacted the female victim claiming to be with the Social Security Administration. The caller ID appearing as “Social Security Office” on the victims phone. The scammer instructed her to wrap cash in foil, package it, and send it.

The Humboldt County Sheriff’s office has received many reports of social security administration scams targeting local residents. They would like to remind the public that law enforcement and other government agencies will never ask for money in exchange of stopping an investigation.
