Mobility on Demand Strategic Development meeting underway in Arcata

Arcata, Ca., (KIEM) A meeting to develop the Mobility on Demand Strategic Development Plan is just underway, and in Arcata the community’s help is much needed.

Bike share, electric scooters, and ridesharing apps like Uber and Lyft are travel options referred to as the trendy catch-phrase “Mobility on Demand.”

The Humboldt County Association of Governments (HCAOG) is assessing if, how, and when such services would serve our region. In addition to how they could supplement existing transportation services to give people more convenient and more sustainable transportation options.

HCAOG said they will visit several cities throughout the county before a plan is enacted.

“Knowing about all the things that big areas are doing and having it at their disposal already. We can learn from what we see happening in the bigger cities and what do we think will apply here.” Said Oona Smith, Senior Planner for Humboldt County Association Governments. “Basically just trying to see how the current technology is going to work for rural Humboldt.”

The project timeline is from fall 2018 to June 2020.  Ibi group and Trillium Transit Solutions are consultants on this project. The Transportation Safety Committee meeting will be Tuesday at 4:30 in the Council Chambers.
