Local businesses prepare for minimum wage increase

Eureka, Ca. (KIEM) – Starting January first, California will take another step closer to its ultimate goal of raising the hourly minimum wage to $15 an hour.

Employers with 25 or fewer employees will be required, by law, to pay a minimum of $11 dollars an hour. While employers who have 26 or more employees must pay $12 an hour. When talking to a few businesses in old town Eureka. Most are prepared for the changes, one restaurant owner claims, he will raise wages across the board, in an effort to keep things fair, but at the same time he plans to cross train his employees.

Employees who are not compensated, may file a wage claim with the division of labor standards enforcement or file a lawsuit against their employer to recover lost wages.
