Early Morning Fatal Pedestrian Accident Snarls Traffic and Causes Standstill

EUREKA, Ca. (KIEM) – A male is dead after he was struck this morning on the 101 south of Eureka.

The incident occurred just before 6:30 a.m. on the northbound lanes near the Humboldt Hill exit.

According to CHP, a Chevy truck was merging onto the highway when he struck the pedestrian.  The driver, 31-year-old Vincent Giovannini was looking over his left shoulder checking for traffic. That’s when he struck the man with his truck.

The victim was then thrown into northbound lanes and hit by several other oncoming vehicles.

Both lanes of Highway 101 were shut down for several hours. Snarling traffic and creating a standstill during peak commute hours.

It’s not known if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the collision.

The name of the victim has yet to be released
