EUREKA, Ca. (KIEM) – With a break in the weather and the sun out, students at the South Bay Elementary and Middle School took advantage of the sunshine.

During the recess, sounds of shovels could be heard digging into the ground. A group of students at south bay elementary and middle school took time out of the classroom to plant some trees.

It’s all in an effort to make their campus a more beautiful and lively space.

The original courtyard school courtyard was empty and was only surrounded by buildings.

The trees made a long journey, coming all the way from Santa Rosa. Ten new trees will be part of the South Bay School campus.

The trees not only help to make the school more beautiful, but it teaches the students to give back to the Earth.

Planting trees helps the kids to connect with their environment and be more involved.

Just across the street from the school is wetland, which they’re working to restore.
