American Lung Association Releases Tobacco Grade for Humboldt and Del Norte County

HUMBOLDT COUNTY, Ca. (KIEM) – Results are in for Humboldt and Del Norte County’s tobacco use. The American Lung Association released its evaluation this week. The ALA grades cities in four key areas of tobacco control, based on a series of points. Those points make up the overall grade for a city.

In Humboldt County, Eureka and Arcata received an overall grade of C. In other categories, both cities received an A in Smoke Free Outdoor air and a C in Smoke Free Housing. But both received an F in the Reduction of Sales of Tobacco Products.

In Del Norte County, grades weren’t any better. Crescent City received an overall grade of a D.

In Smoke Free Outdoor Air, the city received a C. But in Smoke Free Housing and Reduction Sales of Tobacco Products, Crescent City earned an F. The ALA says some emerging problems include secondhand smoke and retailer locations.

According to the American Lung Association, the purpose of the report is to increase public knowledge and to encourage local leaders to take action.
