Fortuna’s Code Compliance Officer: “We don’t want to fine anybody”

Fortuna, Ca., (KIEM) Fortuna’s new Code Compliance Officer, Wayne Hanson has been patrolling the city’s street for close to a month now.

Hanson, a retired lieutenant of the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office said he takes pride in taking care of nuisance properties and helping to clean up the city. He added prior to his new position, the city of Fortuna had nearly 20 complaints about problematic properties, and he hopes to get them all under control.

“We don’t want to fine anybody. We don’t want to go in and clean it up and send them the big Bill because we have the authority to do that but we are just trying to clean up the city and if they don’t want to comply then they will pay penalties and the property taxes will get attached for the cost of the cleanup,” said Hanson. “There is something called an abatement warrant signed by a judge because it’s a nuisance in the city, the city would bring in people to clean it up and the property owner’s taxes will be assessed for that cleanup cost.”

The former Sheriff’s Lieutenant said this is a way to enforce city ordinances that have already been in place.
