ARCATA, Ca. (KIEM) – The Arcata Playhouse is putting on a unique show.

It’s a theater show where you can laugh, cry, and even smell the scent of nature and it’s a one-of-a kind play.

It’s told through puppets and crowd interaction.

Based on a French novel, Scotland’s Puppet State Theater told the tale of The Man Who Planted Trees. It tells the story of a man who plants trees for over 40 years.

“It’s a story that’s very well known by anyone who is interested in trees,” said Richard Medrington, a member of the Puppet State Theater Company “it’s kind of gone all around the world and translated into many, many languages.”

The show is originally heavy, taking place in both World War One and World War Two.

“We take this story very seriously, but we treat it in a very comical and lighthearted way”, Medrington said, “it’s very moving in some places. People say, actually adults say they laughed and they cried. It’s kind of a sad story but kind of a triumphant story”

Arcata Playhouse Theater Manager David Ferny says coming to these shows brings culture and opens the younger generation’s horizon.

Kids aren’t the only who can kids relate to the tale. But so can the rest of Humboldt County.

At the end of the show, the kids received a special gift. Tree sapling for them to take and plant, because no matter how old you are, the show still carries an important lesson.

“They take away the message from the show and that you can have impact on your world and that they take the trees and plant them somewhere,” states Ferny
