Scam calls claiming to be from PG&E

Fortuna, Ca., (KIEM) Phone scams may be getting more and clever by the day and several Fortuna residents were the target. As earlier as last week Fortuna residents reported receiving phone calls from someone claiming to represent PG&E.

According to those who received the call, once the phone is answered the caller claims to be a representative of the utility company and advises that service would be shut off if the customer did not pay.

If you call back, the number has a recording that is identical to the PG&E Customer Service phone line. However, when a choice is selected it redirects the caller to someone who says that it is the “billing department.”

To ensure your safety PG&E said the credit department will never ask for personal information, a credit card number or a gift card number over the phone. If you have received such a phone call and provided credit card or checking account information you are encouraged to report it immediately to your credit card company or bank and law enforcement.

If you have concerns about the legitimacy of a call you have received about a past due bill, call PG&E immediately at 1-833-500-7226. This is a direct phone number to report these types of calls.
