EUREKA, Ca. (KIEM) – It’s a big cultural celebration for the Chinese American community. It’s Chinese New Year. Chinese New Year started last week and is expected to last until next week, February 19th.

To celebrate the Lunar New Year, some local chefs put together to a special lunch to celebrate.

Red table tops, red envelopes hanging on trees, and red streamers decorated Jefferson School.

Those who came to celebrate, received a home cooked style Chinese meal. The menu consisted of egg rolls, dumplings, and noodles.

“I grew up eating my mom’s food,” said Raymond Zhang, one of Wendy Chan’s sons.

“I know everything that they’re getting today might not be what they would expect at actual restaurant but it’s real home cooked style,” adds Zhang.

It’s home cooking by Wendy Chan. Along with other local chefs here in Humboldt County, they put together this lunch. It’s all to share and celebrate Chinese culture.

“I think it’s kind of cool that my mom wanted to do something like this and spread Chinese culture to our local community, says Zhang, “it’s very dear to me and very personal to me.”

For the people that came out to the lunch and fundraiser, not only are they getting a home cooked meal, they’re also helping those in need.

All the money raised from the lunch all goes back to the community.

“So we figured this was a wonderful opportunity to showcase the food and raise some money for the community,” said Heidi Benzonelli, president of Westside Community Improvement Association.

It’s community and unity through culture and food.

“We’ve had such incredible support from the local business people,” says Benzonelli.

All the proceeds from the lunch and fundraiser will go towards Jefferson School and Food for People.
