Eureka City Council talks cannabis lounges at upcoming meeting

EUREKA, CA. (KIEM) – The City of Eureka aims to increase public access to healthy foods, find new ways to combat homelessness, and potentially offer cannabis smokers a legal place to consume.

Tuesday night at 6 at Eureka’s Council Chambers. The council will look towards grant funding, to update the Adorni Center commercial kitchen, and fund a healthy food educational program, which could potentially teach children how to cook quality meals.

Another item on the agenda, how will the city use the state’s Homeless Emergency Aid Program funding? If the city receives the grant money, they plan to expand its “Uplift Program.” The program currently provides participants with employment, but not housing.

Lastly, the council will discuss a proposed amendment to the current smoking ordinance. A few months ago council voted to allow cannabis lounges, this first reading, will potentially allow those interested in opening a lounge to begin the process for permitting. The public will have two opportunities to comment on the proposed ordinance changes.
