RIO DELL, CA. (KIEM) – The City of Rio Dell has had a new leader in town for the last two months, and she’s the first African-American Mayor in the City’s History. Our Leon Purvis went to Rio Dell and sat with Mayor Debra Garnes.

In January, the Rio Dell City Council voted 3 to 2 and chose Debra Garnes as the next Mayor of Rio Dell this is the first time an African-American holds this title. Its something Garnes doesn’t really think about.

One of the biggest issues going on in Rio Dell is finding ways to have affordable housing. Its something she met with Governor Gavin Newsom about.

Garnes has an optimistic attitude about Rio Dell. She wants to give others the perspective that the city isn’t as bad they perceive it to be.

Garnes’ plans for Rio Dell moving forward is to spread her positive attitude throughout the community.
