HUMBOLDT COUNTY, Ca. (KIEM) – Vehicle thefts and break-ins are a common problem for anyone, especially here along the North Coast. The Humboldt County Sheriff’s office has released their statistics for car thefts.

In 2017, 721 cars were reported stolen. But last year’s number’s showed, 569 cars were stolen.

“The largest thing that we see is that many vehicles are stolen with their own keys,” said Samantha Karges of the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office.

“Whether or not its because you left your car running to warm up in the driveway, you left your car running to run into the store real quick just for a couple seconds, or your house was burglarized and your keys were stolen.”

But what happens to the stolen vehicles?

“We often find them they’ve been stripped, they have been dumped and burned on the side of the road, says Karges.
“It happens very fast. We’ve had several cases where vehicles were reported stolen, we found the vehicles a few hours later, crashed in a ditch.”

But another problem for car owners are break-ins.

But being aware of your surroundings can help prevent you from becoming a victim. Something else that could help you from getting into this situation is to keep your car in your garage over night. This way, at least you know it is safe. If you need to get your garage door replaced or repaired, it could be as simple as searching for something like Tip Top Garage Doors – Nashville on Google to get in touch with professionals who can solve this issue. Hopefully, with your garage door finally working, this can prevent you from becoming a victim of car theft.

“You can do a lot to help prevent this thing from happening to you, and that’s super key to this,” said Karges.

The Sheriff’s Office advises owners to turn off their cars and remove the keys from the ignition, take out all personal items from view, lock your car, and to keep your car parked in a brightly lit area.
