ARCATA, Ca. (KIEM) – The second annual March For Our Lives took place in front of the Arcata Playhouse. Those we came were there to take a stand against gun violence.

“We are the next generation, who are going to be able to make a change in legislation and politically and I think starting our education on what it means to be socially active and politically active is important,” said organizer Naigella Baur.

At the march, community members from all walks out life came to show their support for the movement.

“I think it’s so important that we have young people engage in the democratic process and use their voices and bring their perspectives into government,” said Arcata Council Member Sofia Perira.

“We represent all people in our community.”

The March for Our Lives Movement started after the parkland school shooting last year. Even though that tragic event happened across the United State, students in Humboldt County wanted to stand in solidarity with the survivors.

“Even though the parkland shooting was across the county we felt the effects of it here and every school shooting that there is,” said Eva Swartz.

This generation says, they want to be in school and not have to fear for their lives.

“We just want to be safe on our planet, in our schools,” says Baur. “We deserve an education without feeling unsafe.”

These kids are proud to be making a change and speaking out.

“It makes me feel proud for everybody who’s standing out all over the country and it gives me hope that change will be made, said Olivia Joachim.
