EUREKA, Ca. (KIEM) – We all know a spelling bee is test of our spelling skills. But how about a test of our geography skills? That’s what a geography bee is!

Ethan Alburo loves reading about the world and it’s his curiosity that landed him in the state geography bee.

Ethan studied for weeks and it all paid off.

“My parents are so excited because I’m representing my school,” said Ethan.

He is the first student from south bay school, but also one of the first students to Humboldt County.

“It’s really exciting, we’ve never had anybody go,” says South Bay Principal Heather Becksted, “I was looking up all the names and he is the only kid going north of San Francisco, so it’s really exciting.”

He is the kind of student you can always catch with a book in hand.

“I actually had Ethan in one of my 5th grade classes when I was a teacher,” said Becksted. “I know how much he loves to read and how much he loves geography. You can always catch him with a book about places.”

Ethan and his family came to the United States when he was young.

“I was nervous when I first went to school here,” said Ethan, “I was in the second grade.”

Since coming to America, Ethan has come a long way.

“I’m very proud of myself for winning the bee and qualifying for state.”

This isn’t the first time that Ethan has participated in the Geographic Bee. He actually won in his school last year, but didn’t make the top 100.

Ethan and his family will be heading down to Fresno on Thursday. The state competition is this Friday.
