HCSO advises residents to report all unknown objects

Humboldt County, Ca., (KIEM) Tuesday we told you about a story out of Trinidad where the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office told us a large military-grade object was discovered by a property owner on the 700 block of Highland Avenue.

What we didn’t tell you is that the object, a World War II Artillery Shell, was on the owner’s property for over a decade until recently when he decided to contact officials.

Wednesday, we spoke to the sheriff’s office who says the property owner did the right thing by calling authorities however he should have called sooner. Because the sheriff’s office says a military object or not over time weather expose can cause a possibility of corrosion which can be just as dangerous.

“The biggest mistake that you can make is picking it up and moving it and taking it with you somewhere,” said Public Information Officer, Samantha Karges. “We’ve had instances where someone put it in their car and drove around with it until they realize that it wasn’t a good idea…if you locate a suspicious object on your property or not, call law enforcement even if it doesn’t turn out to be anything that’s a threat to the community. We want to come and check it out and make sure that everyone is safe.”

The Humboldt County bomb squad removed the object. They said it was taken to a safe location.
