Fortuna, Ca.,(KIEM) Wednesday evening staff and students from Fortuna’s Middle School was honored with the Civic Learning Award of Merit for 2019.

Education, that keeps democracy alive.

Winners were selected by a panel of experts based on the depth of their civic learning classes, clubs, and programs.

We asked the school’s principal why she felt her school received the award.

Principal Johansen responded, Fortuna Middle School has an amazing staff and even better students.

“Our teachers incorporate different opportunities for students to basically practice the skills they need to be successful, not only, as students but as future voters,” shared Julie Johansen, Principal of Fortuna Middle.
