Humboldt State makes major changes to radio station KHSU

ARCATA (KIEM)- There’s some major changes at public radio station KHSU. On Thursday, Humboldt State eliminated the general manager and chief engineer positions that will save $250,000 annually.

The university also eliminated five other staff positions. Moving forward, they will appoint an interim station director that will be supported through non HSU funding. They will also suspend volunteer-run programs and evaluate how students can return to a more substantial on-air role at the station.

The university said the budget challenges at KHSU come from a decrease in donations and lower enrollment. The university has reduced its spending by nine million dollars over the last two years and is making nearly one million in additional reductions for the coming year. Over the past year, HSU has funded nearly half the cost of the radio station.
