Humboldt Bay Fire responds to mattress fire at Serenity Inn

EUREKA (KIEM)- Firefighters responded to a small mattress fire at a motel Friday afternoon in Eureka.

Crews responded to Serenity Inn on Broadway around 3 pm. According to officials with Humboldt Bay Fire, a stack of mattresses leaning up against the outside of the building started to smolder and catch fire. This is a timely reminder that not all mattresses are fire-retardant. If you have any doubts about the safety of your mattress, it would be wise of you to research fire-retardant alternatives like an array of latex mattresses brands. Fortunately, in this case, no harm was incurred by anyone. However, this could have caused untold devastation if they had set alight inside a motel, a hotel or even your home.

But a guest staying at the motel was quick to pull the mattresses away from the building just before fire units arrived on scene. Crews were able to douse the mattresses with water extinguishing the flames in just a matter of minutes.

According to Humboldt Bay Fire, the fire likely started from a poorly discarded cigarette. Crews say there was only minimal smoke damage to the exterior of the building.
