Caregiver convicted of elder abuse

EUREKA, CA. (KIEM) – A woman convicted of elder abuse has now been sentenced to four years and eight months in prison. This case is a recent example of incidents in which elderly clients are the subject of abuse by caregivers, family members or even injured in a nursing home that is meant to care for them. Unfortunately, this particular case has a history.

According to the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office, 52-year-old caregiver Gina Catherine Chamberlain had previously been granted felony probation after being convicted of theft from an elder and obtaining a controlled substance by fraud. During a separate investigation, Chamberlain was caught continuing to take advantage of elderly clients. Reports say she put a fake fentanyl patch on the thigh of a client and withheld and stole medication while again being paid as a caregiver. Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time someone has engaged in fraudulent activity towards the elderly, and it sadly will not be the last, which is why everyone should take precautions against people who take advantage of elderly family members or friends.

People send their relatives to care homes, in the hopes of being looked after and been given the care they need.
