ARCATA (KIEM) – It’s a race that combines art, creativity, and engineering. With the race just right around the corner, teams of racers are getting ready for the Kinetic Race.

They look like parade floats, getting ready to make their way down the street. But don’t let it deceive you. These machines won’t be marching.

“People are stretched to do things they normally wouldn’t do,” says veteran racer June Moxon, “putting so many different people together that don’t know each other, and yet they’re there and they’re there for a common goal.”

They’re competing in what’s called the Triathlon of the Art World, the three day Kinetic Race.

“Here you are in this giant machine, in this sculpture and there’s all these people and they’re all excited and it’s like ahhh,” laughed Moxon.

It’s a big year for THE RACE because it’s turning 50 years old! For veteran racers like Ken Beidleman and June Moxon, they’ve been going at this for over thirty years.

This is 35th year Ken Beidleman and 37th year for Moxon.

But for all the racers, there’s no thrill like it.

“We have a super strong team,” said pilot racer Dale Welch, “we’re excited, we’ve been practicing, and working together for a few years now.”

“We feel really solid about and feel really excited to be working together again.”

The race is a challenge. It tests your endurance, mind, and overall creativity.

“The physical-ness is way beyond what people expect,” says Biedleman, “they don’t understand that’s why they’re such great engineering that goes into these vehicles.”

The race kicks off at noon tomorrow at the Arcata Plaza, and day one of the race ends in Eureka.
