EUREKA, CA (KIEM) – A brain tips over and a lady swims through the bay on day two of the Kinetic Grand Championship Race. We were by the Samoa Bridge. We show you how the sculptures made out in the water.

Kinetic Pilots race their sculptures down a ramp and into the water. They do this to see if it will float or sink. Some, tipped over.

“That was awesome. Ya know, I mean there’s no way there’s not going to be some sort of carnage. People watch NASCAR for a reason. They pray for wrecks,” said Paul Costa, Samoa Resident.

“I felt bad for them. I mean, they got it back up. And it looks like they’ve got a portion of their brain back on top of their bike,” said Arianna Bayless, Eureka Resident.

One lady did not build a kinetic to ride. She surprised the crowd by swimming.

“I would be freezing cold and a little terrified,” said Arianna Bayless.

“And we don’t know where the rest of her team was, cause she was just solo swimming down the Bay,” said Michael Bayless, Eureka Resident.

“Nobody’s kayaking near hear. I hope somebody’s keeping an eye on her,” said Arianna Bayless.

The annual event attracts people from outside Humboldt County.

“I’ve known about it for years. I follow it on YouTube. Watch all the videos. I’ve done other races like Obtainium Cup in the Bay area. This is of course, the granddaddy of them all,” said Joel Clark, San Jose Resident.

Other participants come every year. One man got involved at the age of eight. He’s now 44.

“Its adults having fun, so kids want to grow up. Its adults showing kids and themselves that basically, you can have fun for your whole life. And that’s a good thing,” said Kristoffer Taylor, a Humboldt County local.

Some enjoy this part of the race most.

“This is way cooler than just watching them Race out of the Arcata Plaza,” said Arianna Bayless.

The Kinetic race continues Monday at 10 a.m. Racers will take off at Crab Park, ride past Fernbridge, and descend onto private property at the Worswick Bar.
