Over 200 veterans honored and remembered at Eureka Cemetery

Eureka, Ca., (KIEM) Memorial Day is here which means Memorial Day celebrations and honor ceremonies are in full swing.

This morning over 200 veterans were honored and remembered by friends and family at Myrtle Grove Memorial Cemetery in Eureka by placing flags as a sign of respect.

Twelve local World War II Veterans were recognized publicly for all of their service and sacrifice.

Not only did today’s memorial service highlight the men and who fought for the United States.

The ceremony also shed light on our county as a whole as gatherers recited the pledge of allegiance and witnessed the ceremonial folding of the American flag.

A member of the Redwood Veterans Honor Guard shared that she entered the service at the tender age of 17 and said it’s not an easy battle when returning home.

“It’s damaging and detrimental and the folks that come back and managed to pick up their lives and carry on good for them,” said Veteran Pamela Ward. “But there are so many that don’t and I’m not just talking about the Dead. I’m talking about all the ones we have on the street that have mental disabilities and PTSD and not getting what they are earned.”

In addition to raising the flag, the veterans guard also laid down a memorial wreath in memory of our vets.
