TRINIDAD, CA (KIEM) – A kayak Trinidad business owner is accusing the Trinidad Rancheria of restricting his access to the Ocean at Launcher Beach on Memorial Day. The Rancheria firing back, saying he was parked in one spot for too long.  We bring you more on this situation.

On Memorial Day, the Trinidad Rancheria called the Sheriff’s Office for a vehicle that they said was parked in a no-parking zone and blocking beach access. That vehicle belongs to Jason Self who is the owner of Kayak Trinidad.

“When the Sheriffs came yesterday, there was three other cars parked in the middle of the road that Trinidad Rancheria said nothing about. The Sheriffs literally laughed at them and said that I was the only one they ever report,” said Jason Self Kayak Trinidad Owner.

Jason Self recently filed a lawsuit against the Rancheria for guaranteed public access to the beach. He believes the Rancheria is singling him out for that reason. They say that’s not the case.

“For anyone walking on the beach. For anyone driving on the beach. We do not have any intention to single anyone out. Anyone that would park in this restricted area would also be warned and asked to leave,” said Jacque Hostler-Carmesin, Trinidad Rancheria CEO.

The Rancheria allows people to unload kayaks in the roadway. According to the Rancheria, Self’s SUV was parked in a no parking zone for an hour. He views things differently.

“My vehicle was there for ten, fifteen minutes maybe. While I was sitting in it waiting for the tour to land,” said Self.

The Rancheria has many locations for beach goers to park.

“There’s opportunity to park in the parking stalls. There’s opportunity to park on the beach. You just cannot park in the area where all of the signs say no parking,” said Hostler-Carmesin.

According to Jason, he didn’t do anything differently Monday than in the past.

“We don’t block access. Its literally the same exact thing we’ve done every day for five years, and never caused a problem for anybody,” said Self.

Jason self has said that he is willing to work with the Rancheria, claiming he wants a defined answer on what he can and can’t do on the beach. We’ll continue to watch how this plays out.
