Eureka, Ca. (KIEM) — Today at the Best of Humboldt Fair, it was all about the animals strutting their stuff and impressing the judges.

Rabbits and cows and goats…oh my! These are just some of the animals being shown at this year’s Best of Humboldt Fair. Members from 4H and FFA work hard to raise each animal all in hopes of impressing the judges.

“It’s a great feeling, especially when they do really well. It’s really rewarding when you’re successful and I’m proud to show off my animals,” Kayla Hamm said.

For some, this is their very first time raising a farm animal and bringing it to a competition.

“This is my first time ever raising a goat, so it’s been really interesting to see how he grows,” Daisy Shull shared.

The animals may be cute, but getting them ready for the fair is a long process.

According to Arcata High School’s FFA advisor, Kelly Miller, “They’re learning how to care for this animal. They’re feeding them, exercising them, and spending time with them. When they come to the fair, it’s like a showcase to their project.”

Miller also stressed how excited the children are about raising and showing their animals.

“If you don’t know what’s going on and come to the fair, ask these children what they are doing and they are happy to share their project,” Miller said.

Despite the outcome, each of the children are just happy to be able to spend time with the animals doing what they love.

“Being able to be involved in the experience. Getting to know the animals and raise them because, without it, I wouldn’t be here raising animals and have the opportunities that I do,” Trinity Hamm said.

On Saturday night, there will be an auction where people from the community can come out and purchase some of the winning animals. Along with all the rides, there is also auto racing tomorrow at Redwood Acres.
