REDWOOD ACRES, CA (KIEM) – The 2019 best of Humboldt Fair continues with the Exceptional Rodeo. We went to Redwood Acres to see what it was all about.

Petting horses, playing horseshoes and riding on top of a saddle are all rodeo-style games. This exceptional event is an opportunity for disabled kids and adults to be Cowboys and Cowgirls.

“It helps all of us. It helps us special needs kids out. So we can come out and have fun and do things that we never knew how to do. Or not know how to do,” said Nannette Kohler, a Eureka Resident.

One of the things participants got to do at the Exceptional Rodeo is learn how to rope a steer.

“For me, to come to the horse races and see horses, I don’t have the money for it. I don’t have the money to do stuff like this,” said Kohler.

Nannette Kohler is one of the many reasons why Humboldt Sponsors is hosting the Exceptional Rodeo this year.  They want to make sure people like her can have fun with no cost.

“It just fun to watch. They have so much fun. They’re usually with their peers and their friends. It’s a little competition, and they are having a good time,” said Becky Giacomini, President of Humboldt Sponsors.

Speaking of competition, others enjoy racing around poles on a pretend horse.

“I [raced the] poles with a horse thing, and I did it like fast. Very fast,” said Chantel Aschwandan, an Arcata Resident.

Nannette is thankful to be able to go to an event like the Exceptional Rodeo.

“I’m glad they do this for us, because a lot of people don’t do stuff for special needs kids, and I come every year,” said Kohler.

The 2019 Best of Humboldt Fair concluded Sunday.
